When I was a child, I played school all the time. By fifth grade I knew I wanted to become a teacher. I have been so blessed that I was able to pursue that dream. This year marks my 34th year in teaching and I absolutely love being a teacher. For me, it really isn't a job. It is a calling. I want to make learning fun, exciting, and memorable for all of my students. I want to make a difference in the lives of "my kids". I want them to know that I love them and I believe in them. I have high expectations for all of my students. I want them to be successful and I push them to do their best so that they will be able to follow their dreams.
My mom graduated from Gravette High School in 1948 and my husband Arlan and I graduated from GHS in 1980. Our four children were also fortunate enough to graduate from Gravette too. Currently we have five grandchildren enrolled in the district. Yes, I believe in our school system. You might say that attending school here is "a family tradition"!
I am so excited that I have the opportunity to teach four sections (my homeroom, Mrs. Riggs', Mrs. Conner's, and Mrs. Horton's) of Science this year. Science is all around us. It's a part of everything we see and do. It has become one of my passions. I believe it is so important that our students have a great foundation that will enable them to be successful as they continue their educational pursuits.
Each summer Arlan and I like to do a little traveling. Our favorite destinatiion is Silverton, Colorado. Going there is like a trip back in time. We take our 4-wheeler and ride the trails. This past summer we rode over 300 miles. We never get tired of seeing God's beautiful creations. The scenery and the wildlife are fabulous! This year we were able to see a cow moose and her calf a couple of times! It was really exciting!
Anyone who knows me well will tell you that I love penguins. If you visit my classroom, you will see penguin posters and lots of penguin decorations. Miss Martin, (yes, the Miss Martin from Glenn Duffy) is really to blame or to credit. LOL She was my 4th grade teacher and we studied Antarctica. I took one look at the penguins and fell in love. I have quite the collection of porcelain penguins, penguin cookie jars, salt and pepper shakers, stuffed penguins, etc. I love all things penguin. I even have a penguin backpack that I usually take on field trips.
I am the kind of teacher who wants parents to be involved in their child's education. You are always welcome to visit my classroom. There is usually something fun and exciting going on. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
