January is School Board Appreciation Month, a chance to recognize and appreciate the dedication and service of our school board members. These community leaders volunteer countless hours, working to ensure the success of our students, teachers, and schools.

Our dedicated school board meets once a month—and sometimes twice—for meetings that can last many hours. Throughout the year, they also take time to visit each school and services building for monthly breakfast or lunch meetings, ensuring they stay connected with staff and students. Beyond meetings, they show their support by attending school events, cheering on our kids, and celebrating their achievements.

What is a School Board?
A school board is a group of elected community members who work together to oversee and guide our schools. They are your neighbors—parents, grandparents, and community leaders—who care deeply about making sure students get the best education possible.
What Does a School Board Do?
A School Board is a small group of decision makers that oversee everything in a school district. They are the highest level of direct authority in a school district. Teachers answer to Principals, Principals answer to the Superintendent, and the Superintendent answers to the School Board. Some of the responsibilities of a school board are:
Setting goals for the district and helping to make important decisions like hiring the superintendent.
Approving the district’s budget and deciding where resources like funding, staffing, and technology are focused.
Creating and reviewing policies to keep our schools safe and running smoothly.
Advocating for students, staff, and families to make sure education remains a top priority in our community.
How Does Someone Become a School Board Member?
School board members are elected by the community during local elections. Parents and guardians have a say in who represents the interests and values of their family when it comes to decisions about running a school district. School Board Members are the representatives that carry out the will of the voters. These members volunteer their time to serve—without pay—because they care about making a difference for every student.
Why Do Board Members Volunteer?
School board members volunteer their time to serve our schools because they want to make an impact on their community. Being on the school board is more than attending a few meetings. School Board Members:
Spend hours preparing for meetings by reading reports, analyzing budgets, and reviewing policies.
Attend events, workshops, and training to stay informed about the best practices in education.
Listen to families, teachers, and students to make thoughtful, balanced decisions.
Navigate tough conversations and make difficult choices, all while keeping students’ success as the top priority.
This work often takes time away from their families, jobs, and personal lives. Yet, they serve because they care about making a positive difference in the lives of students, teachers, and families. That personal sacrifice is one of the reasons our School Board deserves our appreciation.
