Student Spotlight

Levi
Levi’s favorite class is Science because it’s fact-based and provable. He enjoys football because it’s fun and challenging. After school, Levi hopes to become a lawyer.

Cinda
Cinda’s favorite subject is English because she gets to read, and she enjoys it. Her favorite hobbies are painting, playing Roblox, and volleyball. She hopes to become a nurse one day and make a lot of money.

Academic Focus

English
This week in English, students received details about this year’s Book Challenge—due dates and important information are posted on the front page of the newsletter. They also set up their English binders and completed the STAR reading assessment. We reviewed CSRQ writing expectations, and students began vocabulary work for our first short story, Seventh Grade by Gary Soto. Students should be reading every day!

Math
This week in math, students explored rational numbers—what they are, how to express them as fractions (m/n, where n ≠ 0), and how to find their absolute values. They also practiced placing rational numbers on a number line.

Science
In Science class, students have been working on a mini project involving data collection, creating bar graphs by hand, calculating percentages, and using Google Sheets to make pie charts. We are also reviewing lab safety, exploring lab tools and equipment, and practicing how to use them correctly while applying the metric system.

Throughout August and September, we’ll explore the steps of scientific inquiry. This unit will wrap up with a fun lab experiment that puts all the steps into action—using a ping pong ball!

Social Studies
Students have started off the year learning their phone numbers and addresses. Please quiz them! This class has hands down had more phone numbers memorized than any previous class in the last five years. Students are learning about maps and will be diving into content with the beginnings of US history.

Electives

Art
Please send your student’s art supplies to school if you haven’t done so already. Each art student needs to bring a 22x28 inch white poster board to create an art portfolio they will use to store their projects in class.

Ukulele
We are off and running! Students have been learning Am, F, and C chords, as well as the care and storage of their ukuleles, and how to play the chords in different songs.

Musical Theater
Teams are built, acting games have begun, and we are discussing which show would best suit us for this year. Stay tuned!

Podcasting
Students have chosen their podcast theme, and brainstormed 10 episode ideas on that theme. We have begun listening to podcasts, as well as made a group podcast episode as a practice in class.

KeyCode
In KeyCode, we are kicking off our typing program! Students are learning to keep their hands on the home row and eyes on the screen while typing.
If your child misses school, they can still practice from home (as long as you have internet access). Each student’s lessons unlock daily according to their class period meeting time.
To support all learners, Fridays are set aside for make-up work. This gives students a chance to catch up on typing lessons if they don’t have internet access at home or simply need more practice.
Thank you for encouraging your child to practice safe and accurate typing skills—it makes a huge difference!
