Student Spotlight
Rextyn
Rextyn’s favorite subject is math because he feels confident with numbers and really enjoys having Mr. Smith as his teacher. His favorite sport is football, which he enjoys both in and out of school, and he also likes gaming. One day, Rextyn hopes to follow in his dad’s footsteps and become an electrician.
Tess
Tess’s favorite subject is English because she loves to read and write. Outside of school, her favorite activities are basketball and cheer, which she enjoys because she had so much fun when she tried them. When she grows up, Tess hopes to become an occupational therapist.

Academic Focus
Academic Focus
English Language Arts (ELA)
This week, students did their first writing of the year, reviewed theme in literature and practiced using text evidence from our short story, Seventh Grade by Gary Soto. Book #1 of the Book Challenge was due Friday—check the due dates on the front page of the newsletter. Next week, we will begin reading our upcoming novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. 📖
Math
Students have been working on converting rational numbers to decimal form, locating them on a number line, and comparing their values. Next, we will begin exploring operations with integers, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Science
This week, students had their first folder and planner check. We wrapped up our lessons on lab safety and equipment, and we also took notes on the metric system. Next week, students will complete their first measurement lab—our first trip into the science lab! We’ll finish the unit by practicing metric system conversions.
Social Studies
This week, students are starting a project where they design a slideshow about a Native American tribe of their choice. Ask your student which tribe they picked and what interesting facts they’ve discovered so far!
Electives
Art
Please send your student’s art supplies to school if you haven’t done so already. Also, each art student needs to bring a 22x28 inch white poster board to create an art portfolio they will use to store their projects in class.
Ukulele
Students have been building fluency with the Am, F, C, and G chords. Next week, we’ll be adding a new chord—G7—to expand their playing skills!
Musical Theater
Big news—we’ve chosen our show for next spring! 🎭 Get ready to be amazed as our students bring the magic of Matilda to the stage. You won’t want to miss it!
Podcasting
Students have been listening to and reviewing professional podcasts using the same rubric they’ll apply to their own projects. This helps them see what makes a podcast engaging and effective as they get ready to create their own! 🎙
KeyCode
This week, our 7th graders will begin practicing the top row in our typing program. We are focusing on keeping hands on the home row, reaching up to the top row one finger at a time, and returning the finger back to the home row. Proper hand placement now will build strong habits and set students up for future typing success.
