Staff Spotlight

This week we're excited to introduce one of our amazing 7th grade teachers! Throughout the weeks, we'll highlight a different teacher so you can get to know the special and important adults who help make our school such a great place to learn.

Mrs. Galloway
I was raised one of seven kids, and my parents were self-employed. I started playing the piano when I was 6, and haven't taken a break since! The person I aspired to be when I was little was Anne Shirley, from Anne of Green Gables... I was certain I would dye my hair red once I grew up. Now, I'm married to my best friend, Ian, who I met in college. My kids, Laughter and Wit, are the BEST. I spend my free time reading, traveling the world, swimming, trying to learn new languages, and enjoying sunshine with my cats. And I still haven't dyed my hair. Maybe one day!

Musical Theatre • Podcasting • Ukulele

Don’t Forget!

7th grade will have 2 REWARD TRIPS each year! Qualifying for these reward trips will depend on 3 simple things:

  • Attendance – Maximum two tardies per class or 9 absences per semester.

  • Grades – No failing classes and meet Book Challenge expectations.

  • Behavior – No ISS or OSS, no more than 9 total behavior logs per semester.

Academic Focus

ELA

Students just finished writing newspaper articles reporting on an important event from The Outsiders.
This week we read about Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy's fate at the old abandoned church in Windrixville.
Next week, we'll see how the big rumble between the Greasers and Socs turns out.
Parents: ask your student how they think the rumble will turn out!

Students should be reading every day!

Social Studies

Students are continuing to learn about the American colonies that would eventually rebel against the British king for freedom.
Parents: ask your student which colony they have found most interesting so far!

Math

We just finished solving algebraic equations and are now working on finding percent increase and decrease.
For example, in 1992 the price of gas was $0.91, and today it's about $2.60.
Parents: ask your student to explain how to calculate the percent increase!

Science

We're wrapping up writing conclusions and moving on to a three-day experiment using a ping pong ball!
Students will put their science skills to the test as they observe, record, and analyze results.

Keycode

Students are finishing up capital letters in typing and starting a new unit on computer parts.
We'll be learning about basics like the motherboard and CPU.
Vocabulary quizzes are coming soon, so studying is important!

Electives

Ukulele:
It's Johnny Cash Week! Students will be learning about Johnny Cash's life and career while also playing some of his greatest hits.
We'll explore music vocabulary such as covers, cross-over, genre-spanning, and singer/songwriter.
Parents: ask your student which Johnny Cash song they enjoyed most!

Musical Theater:
While we wait for scripts to arrive to begin auditions, students are working on a Mini-Set project in class.
Each student is choosing a set piece from Matilda and building a small-scale version using cardboard, tape, and hot glue.
Next, they'll follow “Paint Laws” to paint their creations.
Parents: look for these projects on display during Parent-Teacher Conferences!

Podcasting:
Students are continuing to plan and record their podcast episodes.
They're learning how to organize ideas, record clearly, and edit their work into a polished final product.
Parents: ask your student what topic their podcast episode is about!

Art:
This week we learned about the different types of sculpture: In the Round, Relief, and Assemblage, along with six basic cardboard attachment techniques in preparation for their own sculpture creation.
If you have cardboard boxes or empty paper towel/toilet paper rolls you would like to donate for use in our sculpture creations, please send them with your student.
I'm excited to see what they create.
We are also learning how to look at the artwork created by others and make meaning for ourselves.

On another note, we are experiencing some misuse of supplies.
Please talk with your student about the importance of conserving supplies/materials as we do not have unlimited supplies.
Thank you for your help in this matter. Your support is much appreciated.
