Gravette Middle School held a Flag Retirement Ceremony last week to honorably remove the school's worn flag and teach students the responsibility behind proper flag etiquette.
Veteran parents in attendance included Zac Turnbull, Joe Hatfield, School Board Member Brandon Cravens, and Brent Stephens. Veteran Gravette Middle School staff members Edward DeMasters and Randall Reynolds were also present.
Zac Turnbull addressed the students, stating, “The American flag represents much more than just a piece of fabric. It’s a symbol of our nation, our freedom, and the sacrifices made by countless Americans.”
Turnbull explained the significance of the ceremony, and demonstrated the traditional triangle fold. All students participating had family members who have served in the military. Principal Jones directly addressed these students after the ceremony, acknowledging their families’ sacrifices and charging them with the responsibility of watching over the school flag; ensuring it is treated with respect, replaced when worn, and properly lowered when necessary.
7th grader Cole and 8th grader Tenley, son of Joe Hatfield and daughter of Zac Turnbull, stepped forward to assist in folding the flag under the guidance of their fathers.
The ceremony included a moment of silence, to reflect on the sacrifices made by service members and their families. “We want them to understand not just the tradition, but why we do it,” explained Turnbull, “because if nobody teaches them, it just becomes something you take for granted. It’s about respect for all the people behind it.”
The flag retirement was a reminder that respect for the flag is learned through understanding, experience, and example. We are grateful to the community veterans who took the time to speak with and guide our students. By preserving these traditions, we help ensure we never forget the service and sacrifice that make it possible for the flag to fly.
